According to an interview with Clarks.com, writer and analyst Clark Howard said that he expects airfare to be more expensive than ever in 2023 for a multitude of reasons. As airlines like Delta, United, and American begin to retire their aging fleet of planes like the CRJ-200. The planes being retired will most likely be replaced by ones with more emphasis on premium fares, which combined with the shortages coming through from Airbus and Boeing could create an even bigger crunch on value seeking travelers. Airline staff shortages are also not expected to relent just yet, according to Axios, meaning airlines may have trouble meeting the expected surge in demand this summer.
Stepping up to fill the crunch that typical travel destinations are facing will be attractions and theme parks around the state of Missouri. With prices at typical destinations reaching new all time highs, local attractions like Silver Dollar City, Six Flags St. Louis, and Worlds of Fun will look to fill the gaps and increase their attendance after a down year in 2022. Not only will these parks offer a significant discount, there is also plenty of new exciting fun to be had at them this summer.
Blake Arciga, a student at the University of Missouri, says that when he looks for something to do for a fun outing with friends, he “usually do free things to save money.” But when his friends and Arciga do spend money, they “have to be financially conscious in what activities they spend money on”
Missouri attractions having a good season is important to locals looking for fun, but also those looking for employment. Worlds of Fun Public Relations Manager Brian McGannon said he expects a sizable boost to attendance, due to both the park opening Zambezi Zinger, a steel/wood hybrid coaster in homage to the park’s retired attraction by the same name, and the park celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
With this increase expected, McGannon says that Worlds of Fun will look to host more hiring fairs and bring in more seasonal employees this theme park season. The park recently took part in parent company Cedar Fair’s Hiring Week, intended to inform potential employees of the opportunity. According to their website, Worlds of Fun is looking to hire for all types of positions, from ride operators to sous chefs to HR employees.
Out in Branson, Silver Dollar City is retiring the long beloved Fire In The Hole! While Brad Thomas, President of Silver Dollar City, says there will be “exciting announcements in the future” about what to expect in terms of new attractions, the retirement of Fire In The Hole! should bring an increase of visitors during the 2023 season, which opened on Mar. 11.
For Six Flags St. Louis, the park is adding its first new coaster since 2013 with the addition of Rookie Racer. Six Flags’ attendance as a company was down in 2022 compared to both 2021 and 2019, so the chain will look towards 2023 as a year to bounce back and pay down some of its large debt.
Wherever you are in Missouri, there is an attraction just a drive or train ride away that offers value for money, or if you are looking for short-term seasonal employment, a possibility in that space.
